POPPY’S Gouache, Pencil, A5 2010

The Poppy as a symbol of death, growth, renewal, harvest and sacrifice is maybe as old as civilization. For the Romans it was the sacred plant of Ceres. For the Egyptians it was an emblem of blood and new life. To us it is the flower of remembrance. I have been painting Poppy’s since 1993 and I have usually worked on them each year. This set of images comes from a selection made in 2010. As with all my work the renewal of a subject each year is both part of my interest in the whole process of loss and renewal in all life forms and in the evolution of this work.
