David Measures, a founder member of Southwell Artists, died on August 4th after a long illness. He was both a wildlife artist and a painter of almost abstract small landscapes. Most all his work was created in his beloved countryside. For years he was both an inspirational teacher in what is now Nottingham Trent University.
A few of his wildlife notebooks were published, 'Bright Wings of Summer' and 'Butterfly Season 1984', but others are to be inherited by the Natural History Museum.
He was an artist who's' work was valued both in Britain and in Europe. But, above all, those that knew him will miss his bounding enthusiasm, love of people and that fountain of ideas.

I usually work on a single project or subject over a period of time, sometimes returning to this subject year after year. A subject may also be an event in time and space,a phase of work, or the result of a journey. Some subjects may only have one, or many images.

MAGGY MILNER
A Delicate Balance
A creative art installation at The Workhouse, Southwell.
4 August to 4 Sept 2011

When I first started thinking about doing a series of installations in The Workhouse I walked around alone with my camera exploring, soaking up the atmosphere of the building and it’s history. I was very aware of the cold light; doorways and separated ways; long unfriendly passages; steep staircases with worn steps; lines scratched by the inmates on walls to mark the time passing; bleak spaces; dark, damp cellars; all of which spoke to me of the harsh existence, the segregation, austerity and lack of privacy that the inmates must have experienced. I also tried to imagine the sounds of feet clattering in clogs, orders shouted, inmates gossiping and complaining…

These images are my first personal response to The Workhouse, the beginnings of my thinking and interpretation, and fuelled my imagination for A Delicate Balance.

The Southwell Open Studios held in November 2010 were once again a great success. Having this happen so late in the year we were very lucky to have had two glorious days of sunshine, which made the walk around the studios so much more pleasant and relaxing.
